Inkscape SVG Preparation for Laser Cutting

An SVG that looks correct on screen can still contain open contours, duplicate paths, unexpected scale, or geometry that causes extra machine passes. Use this Inkscape preflight to inspect the file before importing it into laser software.

About Inkscape SVG for laser cutting

Start with the process plan. Identify which elements are intended to cut, score, or engrave. Laser applications interpret SVG styling differently, so do not assume that one stroke width or colour convention works for every controller. Confirm the destination software's import rules.

Verify physical scale before geometry cleanup. Set the document units and page dimensions deliberately, then check at least one known measurement after import. A visually correct drawing can still arrive at the wrong physical size when document dimensions and coordinate units disagree.

Inspect the geometry itself. Closed cut shapes should have closed contours; open paths should remain only when the operation intentionally follows an open line. Check compound holes, converted text, grouped objects, and any clipping or reference material that the destination application may not interpret as expected.

Duplicate paths can cause a laser to traverse the same line more than once. Review overlapping objects, hidden layers, copied outlines, and tiny fragments. Use node inspection to find short stray segments, accidental joins, self-intersections, and excessive nodes around curves.

Treat fills and strokes as operation labels, not proof that the geometry is ready. Separate cut, score, and engrave elements clearly, then confirm the imported operation assignments in the destination application. Do not rely on appearance in Inkscape alone.

Keep the editable Inkscape master and save a separate interoperable SVG for transfer. Reopen the exported file, check its bounds and geometry, and perform a final import review for dimensions, closed paths, duplicate lines, and intended operations before production.
