About SVG for packaging design

Packaging design involves artwork that may need to print on surfaces ranging from a 20mm jar lid label to a full pallet wrap. This range demands vector format — raster logos lose quality when scaled beyond their source resolution.

SVG provides the ideal source format for packaging workflows. It is resolution-independent, edits freely in all design applications (Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Inkscape), and exports to PDF or EPS for prepress delivery.

For label printing: supply the label printer with your logo as a PDF exported from an SVG source. Include 3mm bleed, crop marks, and specify whether colours are CMYK or Pantone. Dieline templates are usually provided by the printer — place your SVG logo within the dieline guide.

For folding carton and box packaging: the structural dieline is typically in AI or DXF format. Import your SVG logo into Illustrator and place it within the flat dieline layout. Export the combined file as a PDF/X standard for the print supplier.

For digital label printing (short-run, no minimum): PDF files exported from vector artwork print cleanly on label stock. Ensure the PDF is at the final label dimensions at 1:1 — digital label printers do not scale your artwork.

If your current logo is only available as a PNG or JPG, vectorize it with the Logo Vectorizer first before beginning packaging layout work.
