Step 1 — Vectorize all raster elements. Raster images (PNG, JPG) embedded in a design must be vectorized or supplied at 300 DPI at final print size. For logos, use the Logo Vectorizer to convert raster logos to clean SVG paths. Replace any placed raster logos in the layout with the vectorized SVG version.

Step 2 — Outline all fonts. Select all text in the design and convert to outlines (in Illustrator: Type > Create Outlines). This ensures the fonts appear correctly even if the print shop does not have the font installed. Outlined text is treated as vector paths and cannot be edited afterward — always save a copy with live text before outlining.

Step 3 — Set colour mode. For offset printing: convert to CMYK. For digital print: CMYK is preferred, though most digital printers accept RGB. For screen printing: use Pantone spot colours for brand-critical colour accuracy.

Step 4 — Set bleed and trim. Set the document to final trim size. Extend background colours and full-bleed images 3mm beyond the trim edge. Keep important content (text, logos) at least 5mm inside the trim edge in the safe zone.

Step 5 — Export as PDF/X. From Illustrator: File > Save As > PDF, choose PDF/X-1a (for offset) or PDF/X-4 (for digital/inkjet). Enable Embed All Fonts. Review the preflight summary for any font or transparency warnings before delivering the file.
