About JPG to SVG for vinyl cutting

Vinyl cutting machines including Silhouette Cameo, Cricut, and Roland plotters require SVG format to define precise cut paths. To cut a JPG design in vinyl, first convert it to SVG.

Upload the JPG to the Logo Vectorizer to trace it into a clean SVG. The vectorizer identifies edge boundaries of your design and reconstructs them as scalable vector paths. Import the resulting SVG into Silhouette Studio, Cricut Design Space, or Roland CutStudio.

For vinyl cutting, the SVG should represent only the shapes you want to cut. A two-color JPG logo typically vectorizes into two separate paths — ideal for layered vinyl work. Remove the background completely before uploading, or the background rectangle will appear as an unwanted cut path.

For intricate designs, review the SVG in Inkscape after vectorizing. Reduce node count on complex paths where the trace is too detailed — excessive nodes slow cutting speed and increase the risk of tearing in delicate vinyl.

Heat transfer vinyl designs typically need to be mirrored before cutting. Most vinyl cutter software handles this automatically, but verify the mirror setting is enabled before cutting HTV.

For multi-layer vinyl designs, separate each color in the SVG into an individual file. Cut each color layer from its respective vinyl sheet and assemble the final design by layering from bottom to top.
