About Vector image for vinyl cutting

Vinyl cutting machines require vector artwork to follow precise cut paths. Without a vector file, the cutter cannot accurately trace your design — only vector paths tell the machine exactly where to move and cut.

The key requirement for vinyl cutting is an SVG file where every shape you want to cut is a closed path. The cutter follows these paths exactly, so they must be clean, continuous, and free of stray nodes or open endpoints.

For logos and artwork in raster format such as PNG or JPG, use the Logo Vectorizer to convert to SVG. The tool traces image boundaries into vector paths. After downloading, review the SVG in Silhouette Studio or Inkscape to confirm all paths are correct and no unwanted paths such as background rectangles are present.

For vinyl cutting specifically, delete any bounding box or background paths from the SVG file — the cutter should only have the design shapes. Ungroup all elements after vectorizing and delete anything that should not be cut.

Layered vinyl designs require separate SVG cut files per color layer. Export each color from the master SVG as an individual file, mirror if your cutter requires it, and cut each layer from the corresponding vinyl color.

For heat transfer vinyl, mirror the design before cutting and apply heat side down to the garment. Always confirm the mirror setting in your vinyl cutter software before committing to a full sheet.
