About Convert image for vinyl cutting

Vinyl cutting applications — vehicle decals, heat transfer vinyl on apparel, window graphics, and retail signage — all require SVG files with clean, closed vector paths. Raster images in PNG or JPG format cannot be used directly for precision vinyl cutting because the machine requires path coordinates, not pixel data.

Vectorization converts your raster artwork into a path-based SVG. Upload the PNG, and the tracer identifies boundary shapes and color regions, producing a well-structured SVG with distinct path layers for each color in the design.

For multi-color vinyl projects: each color requires a separate cut from a different vinyl roll or sheet. The SVG layer structure produced by the vectorizer matches this workflow naturally — each color group can be exported separately or assigned to individual cut operations in your software.

For single-color vinyl (the most common application for decals and signage): the SVG outline path is the cut line. Simple logos and icons with clearly defined outlines produce the cleanest vinyl cuts.

For heat transfer vinyl on apparel: remember to mirror the artwork before cutting. Enable the Mirror setting in Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio before sending to the cutter.
