Silhouette Cameo 4 and Cameo 5 use Silhouette Studio (desktop application. Silhouette Studio imports SVG files and uses fill colours to assign cut layers. Understanding how Studio reads SVG prevents import failures and missing cut lines.
Silhouette Studio SVG import behaviour: - Fill colours create cut groups: each unique fill colour in the SVG becomes a separate cut group in Silhouette Studio's Line and Fill panel. - Stroke paths may not register: Silhouette Studio cuts from path outlines derived from fill shapes, not from stroke definitions. Use filled paths, not stroke-only paths. - Compound paths: Silhouette Studio may ungroup SVG compound paths on import. Test a simple file first to confirm path structure is preserved. - Cameo 5 and Cameo 4 precision: 2000g cutting force, 0.1 mm accuracy. Very fine details under 1 mm may tear lightweight materials.
How to prepare SVG for Silhouette Cameo: 1. Direct protected-preview input accepts PNG, JPEG, or WebP; other source formats must be exported first. 2. The protected preview is available without an account; editable SVG export requires paid or complimentary access. 3. Open in Inkscape: confirm all cut paths have fill colours (not stroke only). 4. Convert all text to outlines: Text > Object to Path. 5. Save as Plain SVG (not Inkscape SVG). 6. In Silhouette Studio: File > Import > select the SVG file. 7. Assign cut settings per fill colour in the Line and Fill panel. 8. Load material and run a test cut before the full production cut.
