SVG for Cricut Paper Cutting

Paper cutting on a Cricut machine reads SVG paths as cut and score instructions. Paper projects allow more intricate detail than vinyl — fine cut lines as narrow as 1 mm are achievable on high-quality cardstock.

About SVG for Cricut paper cutting

Why paper cutting allows finer SVG detail:

Paper and cardstock are stiffer than vinyl and do not stretch, allowing the Cricut to follow finer cut paths without the material shifting. Fine cut lines as narrow as 0.5 mm are achievable on medium cardstock with correct blade settings.

Cricut blade settings for paper cutting: - Thin paper (80 gsm): fine-point blade, 50g pressure, speed 600. - Medium cardstock (160–200 gsm): fine-point blade, 200g pressure, speed 350. - Heavy cardstock (300+ gsm): deep-point blade, 300g pressure, speed 200. - Glitter cardstock: add 20–30g additional pressure for consistent cuts through the glitter coating.

SVG design tips for Cricut paper cutting: - Use score lines for fold edges: add a dashed or coloured path for score-only operations. In Design Space, assign the score path to the Score operation. - Check island paths: any interior cutout must form a closed loop. Verify all inner paths are fully closed before cutting. - Allow a minimum 0.5 mm bridge between adjacent cut lines to prevent pieces from falling out during cutting. - 3D paper craft SVGs (boxes, flowers, cards) use score lines extensively — review the Design Space preview in Layers view before cutting.
