How to Make a Vinyl-Cut-Ready SVG
Making a vinyl-cut-ready SVG requires clean closed paths, no raster elements, and the right colour structure for your cutter software. This guide covers the full process from raster image to vinyl-ready SVG file.
About How to make a vinyl cut ready SVG
A vinyl-cut-ready SVG is a vector file with closed paths, no raster content, and the correct colour/layer structure for the cutting machine. The following steps cover the complete process from source image to production-ready vinyl cut file.
Step 1: Vectorize the source image Upload the PNG, JPG, or BMP to the vectorizer above. Set 2–4 trace colours for most vinyl designs. Download the SVG.
Step 2: Open in Inkscape and clean paths — Run Object > Object to Path to convert all elements to pure paths. — Run Path > Simplify to reduce anchor density and smooth curves. — Use the Node Editor to check for and close open path endpoints.
Step 3: Weld overlapping shapes Select overlapping paths and run Path > Union to weld them into a single closed contour. This prevents double-cutting seams.
Step 4: Separate colours onto layers Each vinyl colour needs to be cut from a separate sheet. Group paths by fill colour and assign to separate Inkscape layers.
Step 5: Check the final SVG — No embedded rasters. — All text converted to paths (Text > Object to Path). — Correct dimensions for the cutting mat.
Step 6: Import to the vinyl cutting software — Cricut Design Space: upload SVG as-is. — Silhouette Studio: File > Import to Library. — Roland / FLEXI: standard SVG import. — For HPGL-required cutters: export SVG to PLT via Inkscape.
