How to Make an SVG for a Vinyl Cutter
Creating an SVG for a vinyl cutter requires understanding how cutting software reads SVG paths. This guide covers how to set up, vectorize, and export a perfect cut-ready SVG from any image or design.
About How to make SVG for vinyl cutter
Vinyl cutters cut along SVG path outlines. To produce a clean vinyl cut, the SVG must have closed, simplified paths that represent the cut boundary of each design element. Here is the complete workflow for making a vinyl cutter SVG from a raster image.
Step 1 — Prepare the source image Start with a high-contrast image. Remove the background if the design is on a coloured background. A white or transparent background produces the cleanest trace. Increase contrast in a photo editor if edges are soft.
Step 2 — Vectorize to SVG Upload the prepared image to the vectorizer. For single-colour vinyl work, set color count to 2 (black on white). For multi-colour layered vinyl, use a higher colour count. Download the SVG.
Step 3 — Clean up in Inkscape Open the SVG. Run Path > Break Apart, then select all and run Path > Union for single-layer cuts. For multi-colour work, select each colour group separately. Run Path > Simplify to reduce node count.
Step 4 — Set up for the cutter In Cricut Design Space: Upload > Image > upload the SVG. On the Print Then Cut or Cut screen, verify the path preview matches expectations. In Silhouette Studio: File > Import. Use the Trace function on any embedded bitmaps and delete the bitmap — leave only the cut path.
Step 5 — Cut settings Set blade depth and cut pressure to match vinyl thickness and type (permanent, removable, HTV).
