About Convert GIF to PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a superior alternative to GIF for static images. While GIF is limited to 256 colours and uses binary 1-bit transparency, PNG supports millions of colours and full alpha transparency. Converting GIF to PNG eliminates colour banding, dithering artifacts, and the harsh colour boundaries that appear in complex GIF images.

For logos, icons, and graphics with flat colours: GIF to PNG conversion is virtually lossless for most practical purposes. The limited colour palette of the GIF may mean the PNG looks identical — the advantage comes when the PNG is then used as source material for further editing or conversion.

For animated GIFs: PNG does not support animation natively. When converting an animated GIF, only the first frame is extracted as a static PNG. To convert an animated GIF to a video format, consider MP4 or WebM instead.

GIF to PNG as a step towards vectorization: PNG is the preferred input format for the Logo Vectorizer. Converting GIF to PNG first, then vectorizing the PNG to SVG, produces better trace quality than uploading GIF directly — PNG provides a cleaner, uncompressed source for the vectorizer to work with.

Transparency: GIFs use binary transparency (on/off per pixel). PNG supports full alpha transparency. The GIF-to-PNG conversion preserves the transparent pixels from the original GIF.
