Inkscape Trace Bitmap Not Working

Inkscape's Trace Bitmap tool fails for several distinct reasons — a greyed-out menu, blank output after tracing, or a traced path that looks nothing like the original. Each cause has a direct fix.

Steps

  1. 1

Select the raster image object in Inkscape (click it so handles appear around it)

  2. 2

Verify the object is a raster image: check the status bar — it should say 'Image' not 'Path'

  3. 3

Open Path > Trace Bitmap (Shift+Alt+B)

  4. 4

If the dialog is greyed out, the selection is a path or group — ungroup and re-select the raster object

  5. 5

Set Brightness Cutoff mode with Threshold 0.45 for a standard logo trace

  6. 6

Click OK and move the traced path to inspect the result

About Inkscape Trace Bitmap not working

Inkscape Trace Bitmap stops working for a handful of reasons. Here is how to diagnose and fix each one.

Problem 1 — Trace Bitmap is greyed out: the menu item is disabled when no raster image is selected. You may have selected a path, group, or text object instead. Click directly on the image to select it. If you imported an SVG and are trying to re-trace it, Trace Bitmap only works on raster (bitmap) images — it cannot trace SVG paths.

Problem 2 — Trace produces blank or empty output: this usually means the threshold is set wrong for the image. If your image is very light, increase the Threshold above 0.5. If it is very dark, decrease below 0.3. Also check that the image has sufficient contrast between the subject and background. For JPEG images with compression artifacts, try preprocessing the image to increase contrast before importing.

Problem 3 — Traced output looks blocky or inaccurate: reduce the Speckle Size setting and increase the Optimize slider. For logos, Brightness Cutoff mode with Threshold 0.45, Speckle 4, Smooth 0.5 produces clean results. For multi-colour artwork, switch to Colour Quantisation mode.

Problem 4 — Inkscape crashes when tracing large images: reduce the source image resolution before importing. Images above 3000px wide slow Inkscape significantly. Resize to 1500px or less before tracing.

If Inkscape keeps failing on your image, the online vectorizer handles the conversion automatically without any settings required.
