How to Prepare an Inkscape SVG for Cricut

SVG files created in Inkscape need preparation before they work correctly in Cricut Design Space. The most common issues are Inkscape-specific metadata, unclosed paths, and improper colour separation.

About How to prepare SVG from Inkscape for Cricut

Step 1 — Save as Plain SVG, not Inkscape SVG: Cricut Design Space cannot parse Inkscape-specific XML namespaces. Always save as File > Save As > Plain SVG before uploading to Design Space.

Step 2 — Remove the background rectangle: Inkscape generates a canvas-sized rectangle in all new documents. If this is not deleted before export, it imports into Design Space as a cut layer covering your entire design.

Step 3 — Separate colours into distinct paths: Cricut Design Space assigns one mat layer per colour. For a 3-colour logo, you need exactly 3 distinct path groups, each with a single fill colour. Use Object > Group to organise paths by colour before saving.

Step 4 — Reduce node count: Select all paths (Ctrl+A) and press Ctrl+L to simplify. High node counts slow Design Space significantly and can cause cut errors on complex paths.

Step 5 — Verify path directions: Cricut cuts the outermost path as an outline and uses inner paths as cutouts. Incorrect path direction (clockwise vs counter-clockwise) causes wrong cut results. Use Path > Reverse to correct if needed.

Step 6 — Set a clean viewBox: Remove whitespace around the design by using File > Document Properties > Resize to Drawing. This ensures correct positioning on the Cricut mat.

Testing before cutting: Import into Design Space and check the layer count matches your expected colour count. Verify that the mat preview shows the design at the correct size before committing to a cut.
