Convert PNG for Vinyl Plotter

Convert any PNG image into a vinyl plotter-ready cut file. The process converts the raster bitmap to SVG vector paths, then exports to HPGL PLT format compatible with most pen plotters and vinyl cutting machines.

About Convert PNG for vinyl plotter

Vinyl plotters — also called vinyl cutters or cutting plotters — cut designs from sheets of adhesive vinyl using a blade that follows vector paths. Converting a PNG to vinyl plotter format requires two steps: vectorizing the raster image to SVG, and then loading or exporting the SVG into the vinyl plotter software.

PNG to vinyl plotter conversion workflow: 1. Upload the PNG to the vectorizer above to get a clean SVG. 2. Download the SVG file. 3. Open the SVG in your vinyl plotter software — Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, Roland CutStudio, Graphtec Pro Studio, or Flexi. 4. Set the material type and blade depth in the plotter software. 5. Send to cut.

For plotters that require HPGL PLT format instead of SVG: 1. Open the SVG in Inkscape. 2. Export as HPGL using File > Save As > HPGL (*.plt). 3. Send the PLT file to the plotter via USB or network.

PNG image quality considerations for vinyl plotting: — Sharp edges in the source PNG produce cleaner vector traces. Avoid blurry or compressed images. — Use high-contrast PNGs (dark design on a light background) for the clearest trace. — Reduce the number of trace colours — 2 to 4 colours is sufficient for most vinyl cut designs. — After vectorizing, check for small isolated path fragments and delete them before cutting.

Common vinyl plotter formats: SVG (Cricut/Silhouette), PLT/HPGL (Roland, Graphtec, legacy plotters), DXF (FLEXI, professional sign software).
