JPEG is a lossy compressed raster format. Adobe Illustrator's AI format is a resolution-independent vector container. Converting JPEG to AI requires vectorizing the raster image — tracing the pixel data into mathematical path descriptions that Illustrator can natively edit.
Workflow: upload the JPEG to the vectorizer. The protected preview is available without an account; editable SVG export requires paid or complimentary access. Open it in Adobe Illustrator — SVG is a native Illustrator format. File > Save As > Adobe Illustrator (.ai) to produce the final AI file.
Quality considerations: JPEG compression introduces artifacts (blocky regions, color banding) that can appear as noise in the vector output. Use the highest quality JPEG available as the source.
After converting to AI: edit individual paths in Illustrator using the Direct Selection tool, adjust color fills in the Color panel, and use Object > Expand Appearance if needed to fully flatten the vector structure. The AI file is ready for placement in InDesign layouts, submission to print suppliers, or use as the master brand file.
After authorized SVG export, use a separate downstream tool to create AI and inspect that file for the intended workflow.
